Many employers are in denial about the possibility of workplace violence at their facilities.  Small business and large companies alike both believe they are exempt from any problems.  On the off chance management does recognize the threat they do not believe the need for security and precautionary measures are supported by executives who may remain sheltered from the problems.

Let’s just talk numbers for a minute, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics 4,547 Workplace injuries occurred in the United States in 2010, 506 of which were homicides.  Nearly 2 million American’s have reported being a victim of workplace violence each year, many of which go unreported.

At Bolt we have seen these threats first hand whether due to a disgruntled employee or ex-employee.  We have been responsible for protecting a building from imminent threat as well as working hand in hand with a private investigator to minimize any potential problems and working with companies on a long term solution.  Considering the current climate of the nation employers can’t be too careful in protecting themselves and their employees from these threats.

As an employer, what can you do?

1)      Identify Risk Factors amongst your employees.

2)      Establish a zero tolerance policy against workplace violence.

3)      Inform your employees, communicate and educate either thru a handbook or standard operating procedures that each report of violence will be investigated and remedied promptly.

4)      Provide employees a safe environment to report workplace violence.
